About Rory Cubel

Rory Cubel I actually first used a camera when I picked up a Kodak Brownie with flash when I was in my early teens. The only black & white picture that turned out, was of the town Post Office building. After High School and my rock band musician years,I got back into photography with the 35mm rangfinder camera and color slide film. I proceeded to waste several rolls of film until I realized what I saw with my emotions, wasn't going onto film. I picked up a newer 35 mm SLR ( remember Mamiya-Sekor & Petri?) and read every book on photography & photographers that I could find in my local library. I also bought the few photo magazines that were at the local chain stores. I have been influenced by the work of the Blacklocks (of Minnesota),John Shaw, , Galen & Barb Rowell, and Ansel Adams. These endeavers focused my desires into the world of nature and landscapes. The trial and error years worked for me and I then moved to Minnesota and attended the 12 week Black & White Photography course at Film In The Cities,in St.Paul. The 3M Company made a decent slide film then and they provided me with 50 rolls of free film, as long as I sent them a second shot (copy) of my nature work. It was a great time of learning to conserve my shots and not waste film. I lived in the Twin Cities area for 7 years and clicked away at cityscapes and nature preserve subjects. I then moved to Duluth and became professor's assistant in the Photography Dept. at College of St. Scholastica, while I attended 2 semesters. While living in Duluth, I was able to gain a 6 page photo essay spread in Lake Superior Magazine and sold them a seperate calendar image. . Since my north Minnesota 3 year love in nature, I have returned to my home state of Indiana ,collected cameras that go back to 1903, and continue to photograph with my Fujica digital cameras, but wishing I could find that color slide film of years gone by. I am planning to buy slide film from overseas since the 100asa and 50asa color slide films are rare in my area. This will enable me to use several film cameras and lenses that I have owned for years. I do love the advantage of digital photography. I can see my image before I leave the subject, no need to change lenses from macro to telephoto imaging,no costs for film and developing, and much larger reproductions with the use of the right memory cards. I want to thank you for reading my ramblings. If you see an older, tall dude carrying a tripod with a camera attached, say 'Hi!" It might just be me. Peace......... and keep shooting images!
